Noah set to make first start of spring

PORT ST. LUCIE — The big guns are set for unveiling.

Noah Syndergaard’s scheduled start against the Astros on Friday might signal the real beginning of the Grapefruit League season for the Mets, who held back their marquee starters for one week to provide them extra rest.

Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Steven Matz are scheduled to follow Syndergaard over the ensuing three days.

“I’m anxious to get them started,” manager Terry Collins said after the Mets beat the Marlins 11-6 Thursday. “But at the same time there’s a reason why we took our time with them. We’ll continue to monitor their workloads and make sure they stay on track. We’re going to run those guys out there and slowly get them ready.”

Robert Gsellman, who is a strong candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation to begin the season, pitched two scoreless innings in his first appearance of the exhibition season.

“I thought his command was a little off, but his stuff was really good,” Collins said. “He’s going to be just fine.”

Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless fourth inning in which he allowed one hit and struck out two. The righty expects to pitch again Sunday for the Mets before departing to participate in the World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic.

“I pitched in the Dominican [over the winter] so I think that really helped me come in here prepared,” Familia said. “I really only took two weeks off before I got back into training and getting into the swing of things, so I felt I was at about 90 percent starting off.”

Philip Evans has shown impressive glove work at third base, and added a big hit to his Grapefruit League season with a grand slam in the fifth inning against Matt Tomshaw. The 24-year-old Evans won the Eastern League batting title last year, hitting .335 at Double-A Binghamton.
