Jets’ QB Chase could include Philly’s Daniel

No, the Jets have not been linked to as many quarterbacks as there are teams in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. It only seems that way.

With inexperienced Bryce Petty and even less experienced Christian Hackenberg the only quarterbacks on the roster, the Jets need someone with some NFL experience. They have been in contact with Jay Cutler, according to NFL Network, and a visit with the enigmatic former Bears starter is likely.

Another possible target for the Jets: Chase Daniel. The Eagles backup, was granted his release on Monday. Re- ports said he asked the team to do so after Philly picked up Nick Foles to serve as backup to Carson Wentz.

The Jets, according to reports, have also checked in on Josh McCown, the 37year old who has been with seven teams in his 14-year NFL career. McCown was most recently with the Browns.

Two quarterbacks on the Jets’ roster in 2016, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith, are free agents. Smith recently visited with the Giants, who wanted to check out his knee — Smith tore his ACL last season — and to determine if he would be amenable to a backup role, with Eli Manning obviously entrenched as the starter.

Daniel, 30, is a career backup, with only two starts in his eight NFL seasons. Cutler, of course, is a notable gunslinger with extensive starting experience with the Bears, a 33-year-old with 208 career touchdown passes, 146 interceptions and a passer rating of 85.7. He is not exactly considered a great leader of men.

Other quarterbacks of note on the market: Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III.

Linebacker Dont’a Hightower’s visit with the Jets concluded Monday. Next up for Hightower is a meeting with the Steelers. The Patriots remain the favorites to re-sign him.
