Trio of lefties could all make relief corps
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Three lefties in the bullpen might not be a farfetched idea for the Mets, at least to start the season.
With Jerry Blevins locked into one spot and fellow lefties Josh Smoker and Josh Edgin competing for jobs, one idea team brass may consider is keeping all three.
Smoker’s success this spring against righties makes him a possible crossover option who wouldn’t be considered a pure lefty specialist. Edgin has also had success against righties.
Edgin is without minor league options and would have to clear waivers to remain in the organization if he doesn’t make the major league roster, so team brass may want to give him a longer look.
Each lefty pitched a scoreless i nning in the Mets’ 3 -1 exhibition loss to the Nationals on Thursday. Smoker has a 1.08 ERA in eight appearances this spring. Edgin has a 3.68 ERA in eight appearances.
“[Smoker] has got the power stuff to get out any- body, and he’s throwing the ball well right now,” manager Terry Collins said.
And the Mets have seen improvement from Edgin, who hasn’t allowed a run in his last five appearances.
“His slider is back and it’s about being able to command that stuff against right-handed hitters, that is what’s going to help him the most,” Collins said. Brandon Nimmo might return to the lineup by Saturday, according to Collins. The rookie outfielder returned from the World Baseball Classic with a strained right hamstring, but a subsequent examination determined the injury wasn’t as severe as originally feared. Nimmo said he still has to sprint before a determination is reached on his sta- tus. The Mets are considering Nimmo for a backup outfield spot.
David Wright is running to keep his legs strong, fielding grounders and taking batting practice, but still has not begun a throwing program after two weeks of resting his right shoulder, which was diagnosed last month with an impingement.
