- Caroll Alvarado

A worker at JFK Airport was seriously injured when he fell 30 feet to the ground while helping service a jet that was set to depart Friday night, officials said.

The 32-year old male employee was helping prep a LAN Airlines aircraft at about 8 p.m. when he stepped back from the plane without noticing that the stairway leading up to the door of the plane had been removed, according to the Port Authority.

The incident took place at Building 87, hours before the plane was to leave for Santiago, Chile.

The man was taken to Jamaica Hospital with serious head trauma.
