- Shari Logan and Michael Gartland

A $1.8 billion plan to transform the Sheridan Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard is expected to create more than 4,000 construction jobs in the South Bronx, Gov. Cuomo announced Sunday.

The infrastructure project is aimed at increasing truck access to Hunts Point Market while lowering idling times.

The first phase of the project, which will include pedestrian crossings and better connections for residents to the Bronx River waterfront, will cost an estimated $700 million with a scheduled completion date of 2019.

“This is a road construction project and a bridge project larger than anything we have taken on in The Bronx in decades,” Cuomo said Sunday.

Cuomo plans to reconstruct a Bruckner-Sheridan interchange and create direct access to Hunts Point Market from both the Sheridan and Bruckner.

About 13,000 trucks now use local roads every day to reach the market, which is in an area with some of the highest asthma rates in the country.
