MLS: Morris, Sounders top Red Bulls

Jordan Morris drew a penalty to set up the first goal, scored on a header in the 66th minute to give Seattle the lead, and the Sounders celebrated last year’s MLS Cup title with a 3-1 win over the Red Bulls on Sunday.

More than 45,000 turned out for Seattle’s home opener and were rewarded by goals from Clint Dempsey on a penalty kick, Morris’ finish off a beautiful buildup and Harry Shipp’s redirected goal off Joevin Jones’ shot in the 79th minute.

Morris drew the penalty that led to Dempsey’s second goal of the season when he was tripped in the box in the 27th minute by Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles. Bradley Wright

Phillips pulled the Red Bulls even in the 57th minute with a header off the inside of the far post.

MLB: Prado hurt, will miss season’s start

Marlins third baseman Martin Prado is expected to miss the start of the regular season after straining his right hamstring at the World Baseball Classic.

Playing for Team Venezuela, Prado injured his hamstring running out a ground ball in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s loss to Team USA.

NHL: Crosby’s hat trick carries Penguins

In Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby again picked up the slack with Evgeni Malkin out, getting his 10th career hat trick Sunday and leading the Penguins past the Panthers 4-0. Crosby’s natural hat trick came in a span of 11 minutes in the second and third periods, pushing his goal total to an NHLhigh 40 and moving him into a tie with Edmonton’s Conner McDavid for the league scoring lead with 80 points.

GOLF: Lehman wins his 10th senior event

Tom Lehman took advantage of senior newcomer Steve Stricker’s late mistakes to win the Tucson Conquistad­ores Classic for his 10th PGA Tour Champions victory. Two strokes behind Stricker with three holes to play, Lehman closed with two birdies and a par for a 7-under 66 and a one-stroke victory over playing partner Stricker. In Phoenix, Anna Nordqvist shot a 4-under 68 to hold off fellow major champions Ariya Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis and In Gee Chun by two strokes. Nordqvist finished at 25-under 263, two shots off the LPGA Tour record.

ETC.: Newman’s gamble pays off in NASCAR

Ryan Newman gambled and skipped a tire-changing pit stop to move from seventh place to the lead and held on for the final two laps for a surprise victory in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series race. Newman held off Kyle Larson, the second-place finisher for the third straight race. Kyle Busch, was third. In Indian Wells, Calif., Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 to win the BNP Paribas Open. On the men’s side, Roger Federer defeated Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 to win a record-tying fifth title at the event. Jay Berger is resigning as the United States Tennis Associatio­n Player Developmen­t’s head of men’s tennis. Berger had served in the position since its creation in 2008. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia ran the fastest time in five years in winning the NYC Half, and Molly Huddle of the U.S. won her third straight women’s title in the 13.1-mile race. Lilesa was timed in 1 hour, 4 seconds Sunday. Huddle finished in 1:08:19.
