Booker lands date with Kaling

-

A JERSEY diss by Mindy Kaling turned into a match made in Twitter heaven after Sen. Cory Booker asked her out on a date.

On a recent episode of her show “The Mindy Project,” Kaling’s character Mindy Lahiri took a dig at Newark, NJ, which was brought to the attention of the city’s former mayor, who now represents New Jersey in the US Senate.

“I guess anything to get out of Newark, huh?” Kaling’s character quipped in a recent show about Booker’s attendance at a colleague’s party.

But Booker wasn’t about to allow his former hometown to get a bad name, and tweeted at Kaling, sending her a link to a Newark travel guide published by Vogue that cites an infusion of new eateries, including one that offers “a fusion of American comfort food with an Indian twist.”

He added a flirty “I still love U” — with an emoji heart standing in for the word “love.”

Kaling, who plays an obstetrician on the Hulu show, responded by telling Booker that Lahiri’s shade actually means that Newark is cool and that she loves him, too — with a heart emoji.

“You are making my day!” gushed Booker, 47, who was most recently linked to artist and Instagram poet Cleo Wade. “Thanks for the clarification. And if the ♥ is really mutual . . . Come have dinner with me in Newark? #PleaseSayYes”

Kaling quickly accepted, adding: “Now let me get the PATH train schedule.”

After tweeting the schedule, ever the gentleman, Booker offered an alternative ride. “PATH train is awesome when you are Jersey bound. But you are @Lyft worthy! I will send one to you for the door to door,” he wrote. A spokesman for Booker said the date has not yet been set.

Kaling, who is single, famously dated BJ Novak when they both starred together on “The Office.” In 2015, she told InStyle, “I don’t have a particular urge to get married,” and added, “But I do know with certainty that I want to have kids, because my relationship with [my mom] was so special.”

Booker has been damping down speculation he’ll run for president in 2020. But if it works out with Kaling, she’d be the best first lady ever.
