Noah feeling ‘confident’ in pitches

- By MIKE PUMA

PORT ST. LUCIE — The next time he faces major league competition, it will count. Noah Syndergaard completed his Grapefruit League season Friday with six strong innings against the Astros that left him satisfied he’s ready for the April 3 seasonopener at Citi Field. “I feel real confident in throw- ing all my pitches at any given time to any hitter right now,” Syndergaard said on a day the Mets lost 2-0 at First Data Field.

Syndergaard, who allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts, will start a minor league game Wednesday in part because manager Terry Collins would like to avoid using him in the team’s exhibition game against the Braves (the Mets open the season against them).

Syndergaard finished the Grapefruit League season 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA.

“Certainly, he will be ready to go out and tune up one more time and probably have a little shorter outing so he won’t be worn down,” Collins said. “But he will be ready Opening Day, there is no doubt.”

Fernando Salas had a second straight lackluster relief appearance, allowing two hits in one-third of an inning. Two days earlier, he allowed three earned runs in one inning against the Marlins.

The right-hander, according to Collins, needs additional work after pitching only twice in the World Baseball Classic for Mexico and then being delayed in his return to camp because of a work-visa issue. Collins said he may use Salas again Saturday.

Jacob deGrom will pitch in a minor league game at the Mets’ complex, allowing him to avoid the two-hour bus ride to Lake Buena Vista, Fla., for the team’s Grapefruit League game against the Braves. Rafael Montero will start in deGrom’s place.

Seth Lugo and T.J. Rivera returned to camp from the WBC, giving the Mets a full team. Lugo, who is still under consideration for a spot in the starting rotation (he could also be inserted into the bullpen) is scheduled to start a split-squad game Monday. Zack Wheeler will pitch in the other game.
