A 96-year-old woman and her 89-year-old husband were wheeled to the wrong gate at a Florida airport and ended up on a flight to New York instead of Michigan.

Helen Wheeker and George Nobel ended up in Ogdensburg instead of Grand Rapids after being put on the wrong Allegiant Air flight Wednesday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

A malfunctioning boarding-pass scanner failed to catch the mix-up, Allegiant Air spokeswoman Hilarie Grey told WPLG-TV in Miami.

Grey apologized for the mistake and says the couple has been given a full refund.

“We didn’t know what happened,” grandson Dustin Meyers told WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids. “It was a big mystery.”

The couple was flown back to Florida.
