ISLANDERS NOTES

-

Former starter Jaroslav Halak was recalled from his exile at AHL Bridgeport to start Friday night’s 4-3 shootout win against the Penguins in Pittsburgh, the first NHL game Halak played since clearing waivers and being assigned back on Dec. 30. That leaves Jean-Francois Berube on the outside looking in.

“I told Thomas he’s our No. 1 guy,” Weight said. “So Jaro came up, played a great game for us. He’s earned his right. So has Thomas.”

Halak had been terrific playing in Bridgeport, while Greiss has struggled a bit over the past two months. Greiss notched a .891 save percentage in February and coming into Saturday night had a .899 save percentage in March.

“Listen, it’s one big poker game,” Weight said. “You’ve got to play every card in your deck.”

Greiss was named the Masterton Trophy nominee by the Islanders chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association on Saturday. Veteran defenseman Dennis Seidenberg returned after being benched for two games, as Weight thought the 35-year-old veteran needed a break after the franchiselong nine-game road trip that ended March 11.

“After that trip, I think it was pretty taxing,” Weight said. “He wasn’t too happy about it, but that’s how it is.”

Thomas Hickey was scratched for the second game in the past four, while staying in were rookies Adam Pelech and Scott Mayfield.
