‘Yadira’s Law’ eyed by Albany

- Kirstan Conley

The state Senate is pushing for passage of a bill that could have kept the man charged with killing Bronx EMS worker Yadira Arroyo behind bars.

Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn) wants penalties increased for gang members like José Gonzalez, who allegedly ran Arroyo over while stealing her ambulance earlier this month.

The bill would raise the level of charges in violent crimes perpetrated by gang members.

“He should not have been walking the streets,” Golden said.

Weeks before the incident, a Bronx judge declined prosecutors’ request to hold Gonzalez in lieu of $5,000 bail after a violent encounter with a cop — despite the reputed Bloods member’s 31 arrests.

The Golden bill was passed in the Senate last year and has a match in the Assembly, but the Democraticcontrolled chamber has held it in committee.
