Fallon’s closing in on Colbert

- By RICHARD MORGAN rmorgan@nypost.com

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS drew more total viewers last week than its NBC rival — its eighth straight win, albeit by a shrinking, ever-so-slim margin.

The most recent late-night ratings, released Tuesday by Nielsen, had the Trump-bashing “Late Show” averaging 2.77 million viewers for the week ended March 24 — compared with 2.74 million for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Although the win gave “Late Show” its longest string of victories since the week ended Jan. 15, 2010, viewers may be tiring of his one-note shtick.

Colbert’s 30,000-viewer advantage was down from an 810,000-viewer advantage the week ended March 10 — when he drew 3.28 million viewers.

An entertainment expert told The Post to expect wide swings for Colbert’s audience — depending on the public’s political interest or disgust on any one night.

Expect steadier ratings for Fallon, said the expert, who called Fallon “the risk-free Ellen DeGeneres of late-night TV.”

Despite Colbert’s total-viewership win last week, Fallon’s “Tonight” continued to dominate the 18-to-49 demographic coveted by advertisers, with a 0.64 rating — versus a 0.49 rating for “Late Show.”
