THE ISSUE: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical-weapons attack on Syrian civilians.

Who’s to blame for the chemical attack on Syria (“Another Assad Atrocity,” Editorial, April 5)?

The Obama administration drew a “red line” and never enforced repercussions for crossing it. Leaders must back up their words instead of moving the goalposts. Tom Stagg Brooklyn

Syria has turned into hell because Russia and Iran are backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He’s a cruel, heartless leader who cares nothing for the Syrian people. Russia and Iran are only concerned with securing hegemony on the Middle East. May God give courage to other countries to help the Syrians in their struggle. Toby Willig Jerusalem

White House spokesperson Sean Spicer blamed former President Barack Obama for the recent gassing of children in Syria. When will President Trump accept responsibility and stop blaming others?

Sen. John McCain con- demned the Trump administration’s nonintervention, comparing it to Obama’s inaction after Assad crossed his “red line.”

It sickens me how easily people look the other way, even when there is irrefutable evidence of abuse of power, causing tragic death. Denny Freidenrich Laguna Beach, Calif.

Assad’s use of chemical weapons should hardly be surprising. With Russia, Iran and Hezbollah stand- ing firmly by his side, Assad simply does as he pleases. The previous responses to chemical attacks have been all talk and no action.

Meanwhile, our campuses, while always so vocally enraged about the state of Israel, have remained notably silent as casualties mount at an alarming rate in the Syrian conflict. Sheldon P. Hersh Lawrence

This senseless chemical attack is a clear example of man’s inhumanity to man.

America must have a solid backbone and boldly fight on behalf of the hopeless in Syria, who are facing a daily denial of their basic human rights.

Their lives are being destroyed. Silence in the face of this atrocity is equal to consent. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Arthur L. Mackey Roosevelt
