Familiar failing in fourth quarter

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

The young Knicks have their starts down. Now they have to figure out how to finish. For the second straight game, they hung with a playoff team, only to get blown away in the fourth quarter.

Friday night in Memphis, the Knicks were outscored by 15 points in the final quarter, and the Raptors manhandled them in the final stanza on Sunday, turning a close game into a 110-97 rout.

“It seemed like a repeat of the last game,” Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said.

Rookies Willy Hernangomez and Ron Baker each starred. Hernangomez equaled a career-high with 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Baker flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. But it wasn’t nearly enough against the Raptors, who got 35 points from DeMar DeRozan. The Knicks actually led by six late in the third quarter, before Toronto ripped off a furious 33-9 run to put the game out of reach and clinch no worse than the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

“I think they picked it up defensively and they put more pressure on us. They are a great team, a playoff team and that’s how we learned today,” Hernangomez said.

➤ Carmelo Anthony (knee/ rest) and Kristaps Porzingis (back spasms) both remained out. Porzingis has missed four straight games while Anthony has been out for the last two. Hornacek was uncertain if either will play in the season finale Wednesday against the 76ers at the Garden. He said he doesn’t think it is important Porzingis plays in the final game.

“I think we know what kind of player he is,” the first-year head coach said. “He’s a great player. He’s going to continue to get better as the years go on. He’s still young at 21. For him to come back for one game, I don’t think there’s any significance to that. ... We’ll see how he feels. If he wants to play, he’ll play.”
