Spieth falters in final round to spoil shot at Green Jacket
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jordan Spieth was hoping to win his second Green Jacket on Sunday. Instead the 2015 Masters champion finished with a 3-over 75 that left him 1-under for the tournament.
There were no ugly holes, like the quadruple bogey at the 12th that cost him a chance to win in 2016. Instead, it was simply a round that wasn’t good enough to come close to threatening for the championship.
“It was one of those days that I shot 75, but, boy, I felt great over the ball,” Spieth said. “My wedges and short game really let me down this week, compared to being at the top of the leaderboard.”
Spieth played the front in 2-over and was 3-over on the back nine before finishing with birdies on three of the final four holes. He thought he played better than his score indicated.
“They were all good swings and I was proud of them and I’m really happy with the way that we finished off this round to get back to red, because for a while there it was just, you know, what are we doing? And I wasn’t doing much wrong,” Spieth said. “And that’s what was so tough. I didn’t feel like I was doing much wrong and I just look up and it just wasn’t landing where I thought it would.”
Spieth was paired with Rickie Fowler, who shot himself out of contention with a 76.
“I don’t think I helped him whatsoever on the round,” Spieth said. “I felt like if I was able to hang in there and we were able to feed off each other, then we would have been able to push through like you saw Sergio [Garcia] and Justin [Rose] able to do today. We could have definitely done that today, we’re both capable of it. The stage wasn’t too big. It just didn’t quite happen.”
Spieth said he needs some time to regroup.
“These last three events weren’t exactly what I wanted to get out of them and that’s a bit disappointing, with two Texas events and then the Masters,” he said. “It’s almost like just a bit of a regrouping, because I’ll have a really fun stretch of golf coming up. And I’m looking forward to it very much. We got three more majors this year and certainly excited for having another chance to try and win one.”
