Ailing Bird: I’ll be ready for opener

- By GEORGE A. KING III

BALTIMORE — Add a bad boiler to Greg Bird’s inflamed right ankle.

Bird, who was scratched from Saturday’s game due to swelling in the joint, was invaded by a stomach ailment that had him vomiting Sunday morning.

Even if healthy, Bird likely wouldn’t have started against O’s lefty Wade Miley. Bird is hitting .063 (1for-16) with seven strikeouts.

“The foot is good,’’ said Bird, who didn’t give an update on the stomach. “I will be ready to play [Monday]. It’s up to [Joe Girardi,] but I am ready.’’

Girardi said he toyed with the idea of using Bird at first for defense in the ninth inning when the Yankees went ahead. But when the lead swelled to four, the manager backed off and let Chris Carter finish the game. ➤ When Gary Sanchez went on the DL Saturday, Girardi said he might reunite Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury as the first and second batters. He didn’t do that Sunday against Miley, but with the Rays starting right-hander

Alex Cobb on Monday at Yankee Stadium, it’s a possibility.

“It is with certain teams you might consider if they have less left-handers in the bullpen,’’ Girardi said.

Because the Rays have one lefty reliever, Xavier

Cedeno, Girardi might hit Gardner first and Ellsbury second against Cobb. Lefty

Blake Snell starts Wednesday, so it’s not likely Girardi would do it, but righthander Matt Andriese goes Thursday night.

➤ Matt Holliday drew five walks in five plate appearances Sunday to set a personal record. He had never walked more than three times in a game. The five walks ties the Yankees’ all-time record. The last Yankee to walk five or more times without an intentional walk was Russ Derry on Sept. 6, 1945, against Detroit.

“I feel good about it. I was looking for pitches to drive and they didn’t show up and I didn’t swing,’’ said Holliday.

A 13-year veteran Holliday has experienced plenty of Opening Days and home openers, but is curious what it looks like in The Bronx.

“It will be exciting, obviously it’s my first time as a Yankee. I am excited to play in the Stadium as a Yankee,’’ Holliday said.

➤ Joe Torre will be joined by former Yankees Tino Martinez and Willie Randolph, who were coaches on Team USA’s World Baseball Classic championship team, in throwing out Monday’s ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium. Torre was the GM for Team USA.
