Study abroad — in your own city
WHY travel for an international, cross-cultural educational experience when it can be found close to home? Adelphi University students now have the opportunity to take advantage of the school’s New York City Scholars program, born out of a strategic plan to engage them in the world-class metropolis’ unique attributes.
“It’s silly not to take advantage of all the city has to offer. It’s a way for undergrads to immerse themselves in a study-away experience in New York,” says Jennifer Ganley, director of the NYC Scholars high school and pre-college programs for Adelphi.
Set to launch the first cohort of 50 students in the spring of 2018, students will be housed in converted and staffed residence halls at St. George Towers in Brooklyn Heights.
The program will be structured with both internship and classroom components. Classes taught by Adelphi faculty will be held at the Manhattan Center on Varick Street, a 10-minute subway ride from student residences, says Ganley. Coursework including cultural anthropology, women in the arts, disease in New York City, introduction to the oceans, and humanities and history will incorporate Friday workshops and field trips to places that relate to the studies, such as the American Museum of Natural History.
Furthermore, “we hope to expand the program for high school and non-Adelphi students one day,” says the administrator. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15.
