METS NOTES

-

“It’s all about command, you saw the velocity is there,” manager Terry Collins said before the Mets’ 14-4 drubbing of the Phillies on Tuesday night. “I think commanding his offspeed pitches a little better, that is the next step.

“He pitched on a tough night, really cold and windy, so I hope [Wednesday] is going to be a lot better and hopefully that will help him.”

Juan Lagares’

rehab stint in the minors could conclude sooner than originally anticipated, allowing the outfielder to rejoin the Mets during their four-game series in Miami that begins Thursday.

Lagares, who was placed on the disabled list before the season with a strained left oblique, played a second straight night for Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday and finished 1-for-4 with a double. Collins received reports suggesting Lagares was moving freely in the outfield and swinging without restrictions a night earlier.

“Very possible we’ll see him in Miami,” Collins said, noting he wouldn’t mind having Lagares available for spacious center field in Marlins Park.

When Lagares returns, the Mets will have to decide whether to keep Michael Conforto in the majors or if an eighth reliever is more valuable to the club.

Tuesday marked the third time in team history the Mets have hit at least seven homers in a game. The club record is eight, set on Aug. 24, 2015 in this ballpark. The Mets hit seven homers on April 19, 2005 — also in this ballpark.
