NYer ‘swipes’ 100+ phones at Calif. gala

A New Yorker swiped more than 100 cellphones at the Coachella music festival in California — but he was singing the blues when the revelers used their “Find My iPhone” apps to lead cops right to him, police said Monday.

Renaldo De Jesus Henao, 36, did most of his dirty work on Friday night at the Sahara Tent of the massive music, arts and food festival located in Indio, a desert town about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, cops said.

But once people realized their phones were missing, they used the app to locate their missing devices — and all dots allegedly led back to Henao.

“A bunch of people activated their ‘find my phone’ and pointed at, ‘Hey, it’s that guy, my phone, my dot, it’s moving with that guy,’ ” said Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall.

Coachella Music and Arts Festival security guards grabbed Henao and handed him over to the police, who found more than 100 apparently stolen cellphones in his backpack, authorities said.

At least 20 of the phones have been reunited with their owners, while the others were still with the festival’s lost and found as of Monday evening, Marshall said.

Henao was charged with grand theft and receiving stolen property, records show.

He was released on $10,000 bail Monday and ordered to appear before a Riverside County judge on May 26.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he had traveled to the event with the sole intention of ripping off smartphones, Marshall said.

Riverside County Sheriff ’s deputies said Monday they didn’t know if Henao had hired a lawyer yet.

The big crowds make an attractive target for pickpockets.

“We’re talking about a lot of people here, and people can get easily distracted watching another act,” Marshall said. “I mean with the lasers, the videos, the sounds, there’s a lot of stuff going on,” Marshall said.

“And if you put one of these new iPhone 7s in the outermost pocket [of a backpack] or in your back pocket, they’re sticking like eight inches out and you’re bouncing into a 100,000 people.”

The festival actually is expected to draw some 125,000 music fans on two consecutive weekends, spread over 642 acres.

Coachella’s second weekend of partying, which begins on Friday, is scheduled to feature big names like Radiohead, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar.
