Pressure on Trump ahead of milestone

- By AARON SHORT

President Trump’s 100-day dash this week faces plenty of hurdles.

Ahead of his 100th day in office at the end of this week, Trump wants to ram through his second attempt at repealing ObamaCare, avert a government shutdown and score new funds for a border wall and immigration-enforcement agents via a congressional spending bill.

He also announced Saturday he would reveal his “tax reform and tax reduction” package Wednesday.

Trump also unveiled plans for a rally in Harrisburg, Pa., on his 100th day next Saturday — the same evening as the White House Correspondents Dinner, which he has vowed to skip.

“Next Saturday night I will be holding a BIG rally in Pennsylvania. Look forward to it!” he tweeted this weekend.

Observers say the to-do list might be too long, and that the administration should focus on keeping the government running, or face voter outrage.

“The only thing they can get done this week is preventing the shutdown, which has to be avoided at all costs,” said political consultant Susan Del Percio.

“I don’t think they’ll see health care come to a conclusion and any tax plan is a guideline,” she added. “But he’ll be able to say, ‘This is what I’ve done and this is what I’m seeking to achieve.’ ”

Less than a month after congressional Republicans failed to secure enough votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the White House continues to press House leaders to pass a revised bill.

Members of the House Freedom Caucus have signaled their support this time around for a compromise proposal that will allow states to seek waivers to opt out of ObamaCare’s insurance mandates.

But Staten Island Rep. Dan Donovan, a GOP moderate, said Satur- day he did not see anything in the new health-care proposal that would sway him to vote yes.

Democrats remain opposed and House Speaker Paul Ryan told members Saturday he has not scheduled a vote on the bill this week.

Dems already rejected an offer from the White House budget director to fund the border wall in exchange for the same amount of funding in ObamaCare subsidies.

Trump has promised a tax plan he called “bigger than any tax cut ever” that will likely lower individual and corporate tax rates, include a middle-class tax cut and simplify the overall tax code. But the White House has not released details.
