Whale rescue on Bx. beach

-

An injured whale needed a helping hand to swim clear of Orchard Beach in The Bronx on Sunday, drawing crowds of bystanders and experts bent on saving the distressed mammal.

The roughly 15-foot minke whale was found stranded in Pelham Bay shallows at around noon.

“He was beached,” said Bronx construction worker Bob Doran, 48. “Me and some people went in and he turned over and he was all scratched up. He had abrasions underneath his belly.”

NYPD Harbor and Emergency Service units and a marine specialist helped lift the whale with straps until it could move to deeper water.

The cause of its injuries wasn’t immediately clear.
