Scout: Gregorius looks ‘awesome,’ ready to return to bigs

- By GEORGE A. KING III

BOSTON — According to a scout who watched Didi Gregorius play for Single-A Tampa this past weekend, the Yankees’ shortstop displayed no signs of being rusty.

“He was awesome, on time and ready to play [big league games],’’ the scout said of Gregorius, who went 2-for-3 with a home run Tuesday night, and is 6-for-14 (.429) in four Single-A games. “Everything about him was awesome.’’

Including the right shoulder that Gregorius injured making a throw in the World Baseball Classic while playing out of position at second base for the Netherlands.

It is possible Gregorius could come off the disabled list Friday night to face the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

That the Yankees are 11-7 entering Wednesday night’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park is due in part to how well Ronald Torreyes has played filling for Gregorius at shortstop. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitting Torreyes is batting .293 (17-for-58) and is tied for the team lead in RBIs (13) with Starlin Castro and Aaron Judge.

When Gregorius returns, Torreyes will become the utility infielder, a role he handled well a year ago. Moving on will be Pete Kozma, a shortstop who made the team because of Gregorius’ injury.

Tuesday night’s rainout, which was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on July 16, didn’t force the Yankees to juggle their rotation. Luis Severino will start Wednes- day night and Masahiro Tanaka will go Thursday. CC Sabathia will open the three-game series against the Orioles Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

Aaron Judge tackling Fenway Park’s Green Monster was a popular topic in the Yankees’ clubhouse Tuesday afternoon, but where Judge plays in the field could have more of an impact on the games Wednesday and Thursday than how far Judge clears the world’s largest handball court.

Fenway’s right field is tricky be- cause the foul pole is 302 feet away from the plate and quickly fans out to 380. Many a right fielder has tried to cut a ball off near the pole only to see it get by him and hug the wall for an extra-base hit.

“I talked to our coaching staff in the spring when we played at their spring-training complex,’’ Judge said when asked if he sought advice on the nuances of Fenway’s right field, which has the exact dimensions of the Red Sox’s JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla. “We will walk the field in the next couple of days and get a feel for it.’’
