Left-wing laughs to rule at weekend fetes

- By CLAIRE ATKINSON

Who’s rushing in after that giant sucking sound that’s coming from Washington this weekend? Comedians, of course.

President Trump won’t be attending this year’s White House Correspondents dinner, electing instead to hold a rally on his 100th day in office in Harrisburg, Pa.

The result: There’s going to be a lot more room at this year’s shindig for smart-al- ecky comics — nearly all of which appear to lean to the left.

Will Ferrell, “Veep” co-star Matt Walsh, Keegan-Michael Key and The Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj will be out to entertain the nation’s political reporters, who are gathering for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association event.

There will be no shortage of fodder for jokes. Trump, for example, is the first president since 1981 — the year that President Reagan was shot — to bow out of the White House Correspondents dinner.

Historically a magnet for publicity-loving celebrities and power-obsessed business moguls, this year’s weekend is losing some of its snobby exclusivity, with lower-level reporters now able to get seats with their respective organizations.

Sources tell The Post that Yahoo and CNN are taking the largest number of tables.

But it may be comedians who most noticeably mob the place to support Turner’s Samantha Bee, a former “Daily Show” player, who is hosting an alternative to the official White House Correspondents dinner on Saturday afternoon.

Bee, who conceived of the alternative dinner when it looked like the official event might be a washout, is now looking like the hot ticket. The event, to be filmed in the afternoon, will air on TBS at 10 p.m. and will then be streamed on Twitter at the conclusion. Turner is hosting an after-party at the W Hotel.

David Levy, the Turner president, told The Post: “This is her creation. She wanted to do it and approached all of us and it didn’t take me 30 seconds to say yes.”

Turner will be hosting key advertisers at the event, which is aimed as a booster for the press, which is viewed as being under seige.

?? ?? President Trump is going to skip the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, but that won’t save him from the barbs of comedians like Samantha Bee, Will Ferrell (far left) and Keegan-Michael Key.
