Derek coming to NYC for charity

- By GEORGE A. KING III

Derek Jeter will be among an ocean of A-listers Tuesday at the BTIG Charity Day in Manhattan.

Active athletes, former athletes and celebrities will be guest stock traders taking calls from clients on BTIG’s global trading network to raise money for charities. The event was started in 2004 and has raised more than $40 million. Last year BTIG raised $5 million.

Jeter’s name made the news this week when it was reported he and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are part of a group that is in serious negotiations to buy the Marlins.

In addition to Jeter, others expected to be on hand include Alex Rodriguez, Joe Namath, Lawrence Taylor, Reggie Jackson, Tom Coughlin, Mark Messier, CC Sabathia, Charles Oakley, John McEnroe, Mariano Rivera, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi, Mark Cuban, Phil Simms, Mark Teixeira, Shaquille O’Neal, Dellin Betances, Greg Bird, Didi Gregorius, Woody Johnson, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Bobby Valentine, Victor Cruz, John Calipari, Johnny Velazquez and Eric LeGrand.

“Charity Day is important to my firm and I,’’ said Steven Starker, co-founder of BTIG. “My partner, Scott Kovalik, and I have built a culture of giving back.’’

Charities are nominated by clients and celebrity traders.

“Celebrities play a critical role in driving momentum leading up to the event, and fueling the excitement throughout the trading day,” said Starker, a former partner at Goldman Sachs with 30 years of experience on Wall Street and part of the Atlanta Hawks’ ownership group.

“It’s always cool because you never know who you are going to see,’’ Sabathia said.

Betances attended last year’s event and walked away smiling.

“It was a lot of fun. There is a little adrenaline when you are trying to do something you are not accustomed to,’’ Betances said.
