Plawecki laughs off ‘weird’ sex toy prank

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Kevin Plawecki couldn’t help but smile as soon as he saw reporters walking in his direction. He was at the wrong end of a clubhouse joke, but the young catcher handled the prank with class, answering questions after a sex toy in his locker was accidentally tweeted by the Mets’ account late Friday night. The item was in the background of a photo of T.J. Rivera.

“There’s some pranksters on this team,” a grinning Plawecki said before he went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly in the Mets’ 11-3 pounding of the Marlins on Saturday night at Citi Field. “Honestly, I don’t really know how to handle this one. This is kind of unbelievable.

“What can you do? Just got to laugh this one off.”

Plawecki was driving home after Friday night’s victory when he received a few text messages advising him to check the Internet.

“It blew up from there,” he said. “I got nothing to do with it, I know that. I didn’t know it was there. It’s not mine.”

Mets fans started a few hashtags for the sexual implement on Twitter, which Plawecki found amusing.

“It worked last night, so why not,” he said.

But Plawecki wasn’t planning on putting it in a teammate’s locker. It wasn’t around when he got to the ballpark Saturday, and he wasn’t sure who might have to put it in his locker in the first place.

“It’s not something I really want to be involved with,” he said. “I had nothing to do with it to begin with. It’s definitely awkward, it’s weird. ... It by no means reflects who I am as a person, my beliefs, my views.

“At the same time, I do have a good sense of humor, and I like to think everybody does, too. That’s all I can say about it.”

Mets manager Terry Collins found it funny, too. During his pregame press conference, when a photo of him was being taken, he said: “Is this going out with that other photo? Just wanted to make sure.”

Asked if he could parlay the incident into a sponsorship deal of some kind, Plawecki smiled and said, “I hope not.”
