More tests on tap for hamstrung Cespedes

- By HOWIE KUSSOY

Yoenis Cespedes is coming back to New York — for more tests.

Though Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the superstar outfielder is “making good progress” with his strained left hamstring, the team is bringing Cespedes back from Port St. Lucie on Monday to undergo further evaluation, in the hope of understanding why the 31-yearold has suffered several hamstring injuries in his career.

There is no timetable for Cespedes’ return.

“He’s progressing very well with his hamstring, but we want to take a slightly fuller look at him physically to see if there’s something we can do in the way of something preventative to address the possibility of these injuries simply recurring over time,” Alderson said Saturday, before the Mets beat the Marlins 11-3 at Citi Field.

Cespedes, who was placed on the disabled list on April 28, missed three games the previous week after injuring a different part of his hamstring.

Cespedes also battled hamstring injuries while playing for the Athletics in 2013 and 2014, and suffered a quad injury with the Mets last season.

“[The] evaluation is a little broader than just the hamstring, to try and get to the question of why he may have recurring hamstring injuries,” Alderson said.

Rafael Montero may make his second start of the season on Wednesday, but Alderson is trying to prevent the Mets from having to rely on the long-struggling righthander again.

Montero allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings Friday night, and has a 10.45 ERA in seven appearances this year.

“We’re looking at what our options are,” Alderson said. “Obviously we were disappointed with [Friday’s out- ing]. … We’re gonna have to take a hard look at that spot and make a decision within the next four or five days, at the very latest.”

Alderson said he is looking outside the organization, as well as within, but timing could prevent him from making a move before Wednesday.

Steven Matz (elbow) or Seth Lugo (elbow) would not be an option to return to the rotation until the end of the month, at the earliest.

Lucas Duda (elbow) was scheduled to take 10 atbats in a simulate game Saturday. The first baseman hasn’t played since April 19. … Jose Reyes went 2-for-5 and reached base for the 12th straight game. He is batting .348 during that span. … Michael Conforto walked twice with the bases loaded, and has done so a major league-leading four times this season. … Hansel Robles has worked a career best 12 ¹/3 scoreless innings, with 14 strikeouts, since April 13.
