Pryor plays hooky for voluntary Jets’ OTA

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Calvin Pryor was noticeably absent from the Jets’ first OTA practice on Tuesday.

There was no word on why the 2014 first-round pick stayed away, but it is possible Pryor was sending a message he is unhappy after the Jets selected safeties in the first and second round of last month’s draft and declined to pick up the 2018 option on his contract.

Coach Todd Bowles said he did not know why Pryor skipped the session.

“It’s voluntary. They don’t have to tell me anything,” Bowles said.

Bowles said Pryor has been around the team’s headquarters this spring. The team had its first of 10 voluntary OTAs on Tuesday. The first mandatory activity for players is next month’s minicamp.

Bowles said Pryor was not upset with the team to his knowledge.

The Jets drafted Jamal Adams with the No. 6 overall pick and took Marcus Maye in the second round of the draft. That seemingly pushes Pryor out of the team’s plans. The Jets made it clear Pryor is not in their long-term future by declining his fifth-year option. They also tried to trade him during the draft. They could cut him before the season and only be on the hook for his $1.6 million base salary.

“They thinking it’s over for me. … s---, really just getting started,” Pryor wrote on Instagram last week.

During practice on Tuesday, Adams, Maye and Rontez Miles rotated reps at safety.

Second-year WR Jalin Marshall will be suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

“I was disappointed in myself and the decision that you make, but you move on,” Marshall said.

Marshall may have hurt his chances of making the team with the suspension.

“I feel like you only hurt your chances if you don’t come out and perform every day,” he said. “Four games is four games, but I do also get to play four preseason games. ”

WR Eric Decker moved well in practice. He had shoulder and hip surgeries last year. … TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a very impressive performance, a sign the Jets are going to utilize the position this year.
