- Daniel Prendergast

A mother was seriously injured when a hit-and-run driver plowed into her as she was removing her infant nephew from a car on Staten Island early Monday, authorities said.

Monique Knight, 37, had just parked her Ford Explorer near her family’s home on Westervelt Avenue near Hendricks Avenue in St. George when the crash happened at around 12:30 a.m., police said.

An out-of-control gray Jeep Cherokee hit her as she was standing at her SUV’s rear door and getting her 4-month-old nephew out of his car seat, cops said.

She suffered serious injuries to both legs and was taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.

Police found the Jeep’s license plate at the scene, along with the vehicle’s front bumper.

Later in the day, a 36-year-old man in nearby Stapleton was struck by a minivan at the corner of Gordon and Frean streets. He was taken to the same hospital with life-threatening injuries.
