Service for Hayes
A memorial service is planned at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn on Tuesday for Jimmy Hayes of the Persuasions — the ’70s group discovered by Frank Zappa after he heard a tape of the band over the phone. The band’s rep George Dassinger said, “Not even a month ago, Jimmy commented on the Persuasions’ 55th anniversary” by recalling that “55 years ago on the streets of Brooklyn . . . five young men’s dreams of being in show business met with a divine intervention. I was reading the Bible the night before, and in a passage where it says the multitudes were persuaded, the name ‘the Persuasions’ came to me.” Hayes passed this month after complications from surgery.
