Gurney’s expands its brand into RI

Gurney’s Montauk, known for bringing a glammed-up St. Tropez vibe to the East End, has opened a new hotel in Newport, RI.

The Montauk resort features a Scarpetta Beach Club where cabanas and daybeds go from $2500 to $5,000 a day — and the rosé flows freely.

On most weekends, the cabanas are sold out.

Like Gurney’s Montauk, Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina will be anchored by Scarpetta, the popular eatery from LDV Hospitality.

“We are excited to bring the Gurney’s brand into a market as dynamic as Newport. Like Montauk, this property had best-in-class attributes allowing us to deliver a true resort experience to our guests,” said coowner George Filopoulos, who is looking at properties from Florida to Maine for more expansion.

The Newport Scarpetta is based in the former Hyatt Regency on Goat Island. It will include signature handmade pasta dishes and such local favorites as Alaskan halibut and grilled lobster. There’s also Corso, an Italian-style coffee bar and The Regent Cocktail Club, along with the Pineapple Club, a local favorite. Food Network star Anne Burrell just opened her new eatery, Phil & Anne’s Good Time Lounge, at 196 Smith St. in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood, with partner Phil Casaceli, of Daddy-O Bar in the West Village.

The 1,300-square-foot Mediterranean-Italian style restaurant has 42 seats in the dining room, 15 seats at the bar and 14 additional seats in the bar area that serve hearty and “funky” comfort food.

Decor includes metallic orange wallpaper of vintage guitars to reflect Burrell’s “cook like a rock star” motto.

Manhattan is rediscovering its love affair with Chinese food.

Hao Noodle & Tea by Madam Zhu’s Kitchen, an authentic import from China, is opening in the Meatpacking District.

The chain launched its 4800-square-foot flagship eatery in Greenwich Village last year.

The new eatery at 343 W. 14th St. is slated to open this fall. It’s 2,500 square feet with a 1,600-square-foot basement.

Both restaurants are in buildings owned by Walter & Samuels.

Winick’s Lee Block, Danielle Winick and Renee Tabache partnered with Walter & Samuels’ Steven Forest to represent the owner.

A new Indian restaurant, Mumbai Masala Indian Grill, is opening in Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill at 1768 Amsterdam Ave., from veteran restaurateurs Salim Rahman (Tikka Indian Grill in Williamsburg and Kew Gardens), Amin Ruhel (Tripti, Dipali) and Bangladesh born chef Fatema Khatum.

Signature dishes in the 30seat eatery include lamb madras, with coconut, and curry dry red chilies; jhinga moilee (shrimp, turmeric, coconut milk) and vegetarian options like red pumpkin thoran (sautéed coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves).

WE HEAR … That Chef Angie Mar, one of Food & Wine’s best new chefs 2017, prepared a decadent meal at her West Village eatery, the Beatrice Inn, to celebrate winemaker Bryce Willingham’s Ravage, her 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, from Lodi, California.
