Pitching help on way for Mets

- By MIKE PUMA

Steven Matz and Seth Lugo are both slated for a return to the Mets rotation, but not before making at least one additional minor league start apiece.

On Monday, general manager Sandy Alderson cited the Mets’ upcoming schedule — which has two off days next week — and a desire to build up Matz’s and Lugo’s pitch counts for wanting to extend their minor league rehabs.

Matz threw 73 pitches in five perfect innings for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Lugo allowed three earned runs over six innings for Double-A Binghamton, throwing 79 pitches.

Once Matz and Lugo return, Robert Gsellman — who started and got the win in the Mets’ 4-2 victory over the Brewers at Citi Field — will likely be shifted to the bullpen, according to Alderson. The Mets have used a revolving door of fifth starters, including Tommy Milone and Rafael Montero.

“Matz has already been a starter and Lugo has the elbow issue, it probably makes sense for him to be in the rotation, not in the bullpen,” Alderson said. “That gives us five plus Gsellman. It’s likely Gsellman will go to the pen and we do think he can help us there. A five ERA in the bullpen, a lot of people can help us.”

Alderson said he is hopeful Yoenis Ces

pedes will return to the Mets within the next seven to 10 days and mentioned next week’s interleague games at Texas — in which the DH will be used — as a potential target.

Tyler Pill was named the starter for Tuesday’s game against the Brewers.
