Despite result, Gardner would run for it again

- By GEORGE A. KING III

BALTIMORE — Brett Gardner attempting to move from second to third base in the third inning of Monday’s game against the Orioles at Camden Yards with no outs resulted in him getting thrown out early in a game the Yankees lost by a run.

However, manager Joe Girardi didn’t have a problem with Gardner’s aggressiveness because the information the Yankees had indicated that left fielder Trey Mancini’s arm could be run on.

“From our scouting reports we got, that was an OK play,’’ Girardi said following the 3-2 loss. “Probably the best throw he has made all year and it’s a bang-bang. I am OK with it.’’

Gardner wasn’t pleased with being out by inches, but given the same chance Tuesday night he is going to take it.

“I know what kind of arm he has and obviously looking back it was a bad decision, but he made a perfect throw,’’ Gardner said. “If I had to do it over again, I would do the exact same thing. I don’t think he makes that throw but one or two times out of 10.’’ Jacoby Ellsbury is awaiting word from the medical depart- ment when he can start doing baseball activity. Ellsbury, who suffered a concussion and a sprained neck on May 24 when he ran into the center-field wall at the Stadium making a catch, went on the seven-day concussion disabled list last Wednesday and is eligible to come off Thursday.

“He has been riding the bike a little bit and getting his neck worked on,’’ Girardi said of the center fielder who is batting .281 with a .349 on-base percentage. “As of [Sunday] he still had a small headache, so that tells us he isn’t ready to start baseball activity yet.’’

Girardi doesn’t believe Ellsbury will need extensive work once cleared, but the symptoms returning could be a concern.

Aroldis Chapman played catch for the second straight day Monday and will not throw Tuesday.

“You go day by day, you can’t tell,’’ Girardi said when asked when the closer would be available to come off the DL, where he has been since May 14 with left shoulder inflammation. “We have said all along that tomorrow always depends on the day before. [Tuesday] he won’t throw, so we will see where he is at Wednesday.’’
