Francesa ‘saved’ fan from suicide

- By HANNAH WITHIAM

Mike Francesa took a break from sports Tuesday afternoon to hear a caller’s heartwrenching story of redemption.

“Mike from Yonkers” called in to Francesa’s WFAN show to update the radio host on his recovery from a life-threatening car accident he first spoke about on the show last July. The caller credited Francesa with saving his life two years after the accident left him with lingering injuries and selfdoubts, including an addiction to painkillers.

“You remember eight months ago when I called you, I was crying,” the other Mike told Francesa about the emotional call. “You know why, Mike? ‘Cause I was on opioids and I was gonna kill myself. I had a handful of pills and I was gonna take ’em and God sent you to me at that moment, and you took my mind off of what I was gonna do.”

Francesa refused to take credit for the caller’s turnaround, repeatedly telling him “you don’t owe me anything” and assuring him he was just “glad you got through it.” Still, Mike didn’t let up his effusive praise.

“Yes, I was where Tiger Woods was the other night. And it doesn’t take much, Mike, to get you there,” the caller continued. “Two of those pills, a couple Advil, a couple Aleve, and I was there. ... After that, I told my wife what had happened and she said, ‘Well, look, you’re either gonna die or you’re gonna change.’ ”

Mike explained the proactive steps he then took. He went to a neurologist who took him off the painkillers and directed him to a “great” neurosurgeon. Now, he said he’s feeling well enough to return to the golf course.
