We’ll Never Have Paris: Quitting the Climate Accord

-

Thank goodness President Trump withdrew America from the phony Paris accord (“French Toast,” June 2).

I can’t understand why liberals want to participate in a treaty that would hurt the United States and fail to accomplish its environmental goals.

The fact that all liberal politicians are beside themselves over Trump’s decision speaks volumes. This was just another step that Trump took to save this country and destroy former President Barack Obama’s pitiful legacy. Glen Belekis Briarwood

Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate agreement is deeply concerning.

We must urge Congress to push back against this recklessness and enact policies, such as a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend program, that would reduce emissions while protecting the economy. It’s crucial to focus on climate solutions. Terry Hansen Oak Creek, Wis.

Trump made a promise to voters that he would pull out of the Paris climate accord, and he kept it. The announcement was welcome news to his supporters because he just saved Americans countless dollars and jobs.

All the Paris accord was going to do is reduce the Earth’s temperature by less than 1 degree by 2100. In the meantime, countries such as China were going to continue building more coal-burning plants, which would only spew more pollution and raise the Earth’s temperature.

Democrats are going crazy over this pullout only because it goes against their agenda. It’s time we fight back, and our president is doing just that. Richard Ketay Newark, NJ

Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris accord continues to diminish the US’ stature in the world. Climate change is a real threat to our planet.

Trump said that the Paris accord would lead to only a 0.36 degree Celsius decrease in global temperature. If true, that is still significant, as any decrease can contain global warming.

A more comprehensive study conducted at MIT points to a 1 degree decrease in temperature rise for a world that acts now, versus one that does not act at all.

Market forces and automation are already shifting jobs away from coal. Almost 70 percent of the country believes in climate change. So the president was not representing the people in this decision, and he is not helping anyone get a job.

He is simply pandering to special interests, namely the dying fossilfuel industry. Jonathan Fiskus The Bronx

The Paris accord was an effort to pick Americans’ pockets. Trump did well by pulling out of the accord. He stood up for America. Edmond Day Rotterdam

Trump pulling the United States out of the Paris accord shows an ignorant contempt for climate science and a callous indifference toward the future of our damaged planet and its inhabitants. Edd Doerr Silver Spring, Md.

Trump did the right thing. He kept a promise that helps make America great. The agreement was basically a burden to Americans while other countries got a free ride. The agreement would not have worked, since it wasn’t binding.

Global warming is real, but human life cannot be changed to the extent necessary to stop it. Unless an agreement calls for everyone living in the woods or worldwide birth control, carbon omissions will increase. Glen Benjamin Airmont

America cannot afford to refuse a seat at the table on an issue as crucial as our environment. Taking the sensible position on this issue could have marked a turnaround in the Trump presidency.

Trump is satisfying his base on taxes, health care, immigration policy, social issues and others. On this issue, his base would have forgiven him, but history will not.

I can overlook a lot of issues and policies with which I disagree. Our environment is not one of them. It’s too critical to our nation and our world. Elizabeth Hinesley Delray Beach, Fla.
