Smith Jr. to work out for Knicks

- By MARC BERMAN

Former North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. will work out for the Knicks on Wednesday, according to a league source.

Smith, who arrived in New York on Tuesday, also has plans to work out with the Celtics, Lakers and Sixers — the top three teams in the June 22 draft.

However, many mock drafts have Smith falling to the Knicks at No. 8 because of his defensive shortcomings in the pick-androll, he is just two years removed from ACL surgery and he was unable to help improve N.C. State’s record (15-17) last season.

“Has to work on his defense and floor leadership,’’ one NBA scout said.

His coach at N.C. State, Mark Gottfried, predicted to The Post recently Smith won’t be there at No. 8, claiming Smith’s athleticism is on par with Russell Westbrook’s.

The ACC Freshman of the Year posted two triple-doubles this season — the first time a player has done that against ACC competition — and averaged 18.2 points and 6.3 assists.

“His quickness and athleticism is NBA-ready right now,’’ N.C. State assistant Orlando Early told The Post last week. “His ball-handling and court vision is NBA-ready. Had we had a good year, he’d be in the conversation for the No. 1 pick.’’

Had Strasbourg lost Tuesday night, point guard Frank Nti

likina, 19, would have been heading to New York by Wednesday to start NBA pre-draft workouts. However, his French league club staved off elimination in the second round and forced a deciding Game 5 with a 68-64 victory. If his club advances to the Finals, some NBA scouts fear he won’t have any time for workouts.

The Knicks will also work out late-blooming 7-foot-1 Vanderbilt senior center Luke Kor

net, a first-team All SEC selection whose father Frank played for the Bucks. Kornet has worked out for five teams, including San Antonio on Monday. He’s slated as a late second-rounder.
