No discipline for Lee’s festival tussle

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Jets linebacker Darron Lee faces no discipline from the team for an incident at a music festival over the weekend, but still may face punishment from the NFL.

The league is investigating an argument between Lee and a female at the Governors Ball Musical Festival on Randall’s Island on Saturday. The incident was chronicled by an eyewitness on Twitter, with a video showing teammate Leonard Williams lifting Lee and pushing him away from the woman going viral.

Coach Todd Bowles said he spoke to Lee and others about what happened and determined there was no reason to punish Lee.

“He had an argument with his girlfriend,” Bowles said Tuesday. “What do you want me to discipline him [for]? He had an argument with his girlfriend, and somebody took a photo.”

The person on Twitter said that Lee got physical with the woman, using the terms “manhandle” and “dragging.” Those descriptions surely are what piqued the league’s interest into the matter, which was not dealt with by police.

Bowles said he feels certain he has a full understanding of what happened.

“I got everything from about 10 people, so I’m pretty comfortable with my decision,” Bowles said.

Bowles said he talked with Lee about making better decisions.

“As far as I was concerned, you don’t want that stuff to happen, obviously,” Bowles said. “With social media going on these days, they’ve got to take better care of themselves. Darron understands that. We had a long talk. And you move forward from there. We’ve had our conversation in private, and we’ve had it as a team.

“I just know, from the past, any time you go to a concert there’s going to be trouble around, just as an ex-player and as a coach. When you go to a concert a lot of things can happen. You have to be very mindful and very aware of where you are, and your surroundings — and handle yourself better and keep yourself out of trouble. He has to do a better job of that.”

Bowles praised Williams for stepping in.

“It’s a good role as a friend, and then it’s a good role as a teammate,” Bowles said. “So that’s why I’m good with that.”

Wide receiver Robby Anderson had an arraignment hearing Tuesday in Miami that he did not have to attend after his arrest for allegedly fighting with security at a music festival in Miami last month. He was at Tuesday’s practice. According to court records, his trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 11.
