Bird ‘getting closer’ to flying back to Bx.

- By DAN MARTIN

Greg Bird could be on the move soon.

The Yankees first baseman, on the disabled list with a bone bruise on his right ankle, went 1-for-4 with a double in his sixth rehab game with Single-A Tampa on Tuesday before perhaps heading to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday in preparation for playing Thursday at Lehigh Valley, according to general manager Brian Cashman.

Beyond that, Cashman declined to speculate.

“He’s obviously getting closer,” manager Joe Girardi said before the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to the Red Sox. “He’s playing every day, [but] he’s not played nine innings [in the field]. It’s not the biggest deal to me, but he has not played back-to-back games in the field yet. But he’s progressing.”

Cashman said he hopes that whenever Bird does return to The Bronx, he resembles the player from the end of 2015 and not the one who went 6-for-60 before being sidelined.

“He’s struggled and the assumption has been the big reason was because of the bone bruise,” Cashman said. “Hopefully all that is behind him and he’s just knocking rust off and getting back to what we expected before that [injury] happened.”

Bird has not been the same since fouling a ball off his ankle at the end of spring training, and it has taken longer to heal than anticipated.

In Bird’s absence, Chris Carter (1-for-4, home run) has proven to be less of an insurance policy than an arsonist.

“He’s a pro and he knows he’s got to perform for continued playing time,” Cashman said of Carter. “He doesn’t need to be told that.”

Carter, who led the NL with 41 homers a year ago with the Brewers, entered Tuesday in the midst of a 1for-22 slump, with 10 strikeouts. He started at first base, with Rob Refsnyder the other option on the bench.
