Pathetic Parade Politics

-

Mayor de Blasio is still trying to have it both ways on the Puerto Rican Day Parade. His spokesman says the mayor has no qualms about marching because the parade won’t honor ex-FALN terrorist Oscar López Rivera. But that’s not remotely clear.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito insists OLR will be recognized. And the parade refuses to be pinned down.

“The award continues to be given” to López Rivera, says Mark-Viverito, though he plans to “bestow it on the people” (whatever that means).

Asked for clarity, parade board spokesman Andres Chavez told The Post only that a statement last week had addressed the question. But that statement merely said the parade would “respect” OLR’s decision not to be an honoree; it didn’t say if officials would

try to give him the award. So you can’t be sure what will happen Sunday. Parade officials might honor the terror leader in some unexpected way (before, after or during the march) to salvage the pride of OLR’s supporters. Mark-Viverito may give him her own award.

In any case, he’ll be marching with 1,000 cheering supporters, as The Post reports. It’ll still be his parade.

This is a problem for de Blasio — and it’s his own fault. At first he said he’d march and was OK with OLR getting honored. But when outrage swelled and López Rivera said he’d decline the honor, de Blasio suddenly claimed he had privately opposed the idea all along. He even said he’d threatened not to march if López Rivera were honored.

But now Hizzoner refuses to address the mixed signals, declaring only, “I’m not going to dwell on this.”

Sorry, that won’t cut it. Others, like Police Commissioner James O’Neill, still won’t march. The bombings by López Rivera’s FALN maimed New York cops and killed four innocents; there’s no middle ground here.

If de Blasio truly objects to honoring the terror leader, he’ll bow out, too.
