149th Belmont Stakes

THE POST’S PICKS

-

VIC CANGIALOS

1. Tapwrit: Willingly made up ground to finish sixth after getting mauled at the Derby gate. Big names are not here today. His turn with a clean trip.

2. Twisted Tom: Won three in a row before moving to the sidelines in April. Chad Brown and Javier Castellano, at this price?

3. Irish War Cry: Wood Memorial winner stopped after getting good position at Derby. Inherited role of lukewarm fave. Sired by Curlin, so he may benefit from the extra real estate.

DEBBIE LITTLE

1. Multiplier: If Angel Cordero says this is a riders’ race, who am I to question? Joel Rosario hasn’t been worse than fourth in the past four Belmonts, including a win in 2014.

2. Patch: John Velazquez, the leading moneyearning jockey in the sport, knows how to win when big money’s on the line, and he has two victories in the Belmont to prove it.

3. Lookin At Lee: The only contender to compete in all three Triple Crown races picks up the services of the current leading rider at Belmont, Irad Ortiz Jr., who, by the way, won the 2016 Belmont on Creator.

ANTHONY BARSTOW

1. Senior Investment: An impressive late runner who should like the extra distance here, he never has taken a step back in his Beyers. If he moves forward again, he will be tough to top.

2. Epicharis: Hard to trust a starter with no U.S. experience who hasn’t raced in 2 ¹/2 months, but he was remarkable in Japan and solid in Dubai. He always has a chance if he runs to form. 3. Lookin At Lee: Almost always a bridesmaid, including in the first two legs of this Triple Crown, but you have to like the jockey change to Irad Ortiz Jr. He’ll come on strong late, but it won’t be enough.
