Green gets start for Yanks in series finale

- By DAN MARTIN

Since the Yankees didn’t use Chad Green out of the bullpen in Saturday’s 16-3 win over the Orioles, the righthander will start Sunday’s series finale in The Bronx.

Green will take the spot of the struggling Masahiro Tanaka, who was pushed back a day to avoid facing a Baltimore lineup he has fared poorly against and allow him to face an Angels team that is without Mike Trout and plays in a pitcher-friendly stadium in Anaheim, Calif.

Green said he found out he was starting Sunday in the ninth inning of Saturday’s victory, but the possibility had been mentioned to him several days ago.

The right-hander threw 45 pitches out of the bullpen Tuesday, so he should be able to get to 60 pitches Sunday.

The Yankees also recalled 24-yearold right-hander Domingo German from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to use out of the bullpen. German has made four appearances with SWB after being promoted from Double-A Trenton. German went 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA with SWB after going 1-4 with a 3.00 ERA at Trenton.

Tommy Layne was designated for assignment following Saturday’s win.

When the Yankees begin their West Coast swing in Anaheim on Monday, they still figure to be without two key pieces of their lineup. Manager Joe Girardi said Jacoby Ellsbury won’t travel with the team as he continues to recover from the concussion that has sidelined him since May 25, and Greg Bird (right ankle bone bruise) still isn’t ready to rejoin the team and there remains no timetable for the first baseman to do so.

Aroldis Chapman threw 18 pitches in a simulated game in Tampa on Saturday, and according to Girardi, he hit 98 mph. It was another step in his recovery from left rotator cuff inflammation that has kept him out since May 13. Girardi said the closer is scheduled to appear in a game with Single-A Tampa on Tuesday and then with Trenton on Friday. He could meet the Yankees and be ready to pitch in Oakland.

Gary Sanchez made his first major league appearance at first base Saturday, moving from catcher in the eighth inning.
