The sky-high Upper West Side neighborhood

-

Up — way up — on West 85th Street near Columbus Avenue there’s a community of New Yorkers with their own private village spanning the connecting outdoor spaces of three buildings.

From movie nights to World Cup-watching parties to barbecues, the Rooftoppers, as longtime resident Lee Larson calls her group, spend many summer evenings hanging out.

“There’s something about being able to get to a private outdoor space, instead of going to the park,” said Larson. “This is a special thing. I never would have guessed it possible in New York.”

Then there are the views. Andrew Cornelius, who bought one of the five penthouses with his girlfriend for $875,000 in 2012, admits that the binoculars they keep on the southern terrace are “more for [watching] people than for birds. But it turns out most people just watch TV.”

Want to join in? One of the penthouses is now available for $1.395 million at CoreNYC.com.
