Lauding Trump

-

The fulsome praise heaped on President Trump by his fawning Cabinet brings to mind King Lear’s scheming daughters, Goneril and Regan, who respond to his question, “Which of you doth love me the most?” with insincere flattery, only to betray him later (“Prez leads a round of ‘hail to the chief,’ ” June 13).

Lear’s devoted third daughter, Cordelia, refuses to respond to his demand for adoration and is cast out by the egotistical king. Sadly, no brave Cordelias are to be found among Trump’s groveling Cabinet members. They know full well what their future under Trump would be if they were found wanting in their devotion to him.

As Lear stated to Cordelia, “Nothing can come of nothing: speak again.” Dennis Middlebrooks, Brooklyn
