Not a sue-lution

-

While I am all for fixing our region’s (and nation’s) railroads, a class-action lawsuit does nothing to fix its problems (“‘Penn’ and suffering,” June 11).

Instead, the MTA is now going to have to waste time and money defending what appears to be nothing more than an attempt to get press coverage for the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit claims that the LIRR inflicted emotional distress upon its passengers (which is one of the hardest torts to prove). In almost two decades of commuting, I have never experienced behavior that intentionally (or even recklessly) caused me long-term mental trauma or emotional distress.

I have spent much of my academic and personal life advocating for better public transportation. I’d much rather see the MTA invest its limited resources into fixing the system, instead of defending against frivolous lawsuits. Ari L. Maas, Nanuet
