Injury bug hits top prospect Torres

- By GEORGE A. KING III

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Yankees have been kicked in the stomach by injuries during a seven-game West Coast trip that ends Sunday, but the plague hasn’t been limited to the big league club.

On Saturday, top prospect Gleyber Torres left a Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre game at Buffalo after suffering a left elbow injury on a play at the plate.

The severity of the injury wasn’t revealed by the Yankees after a 5-2 loss to the Athletics at the Coliseum.

In 23 games for SWB, Torres is hitting .309 (24-for-79) with two homers and 16 RBIs after starting the season at Double-A Trenton.

During the trip, the Yankees lost CC Sabathia and Adam Warren to the disabled list, watched Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks leave the game Thursday night, saw Matt Holliday scratched Saturday due to an allergic reaction and shut down Greg Bird from a minor league rehab assignment with SWB because of his continuing right ankle problem.

Joe Girardi said Sanchez was more likely to be back in the starting lineup Sunday than was Hicks. Sanchez said he was ready to catch Luis Cessa.

“Wait and see what the manager decides,” said Sanchez, who whiffed as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning Saturday.

Hicks did some agility drills and said his leg felt better, but the Yankees might take advantage of Monday’s day off and wait until Tuesday to return the switch-hitter to center field.
