GOP survivor: Arm Congress s
A Republican congressman who survived the horrific baseball-practice shooting last week will propose legislation to allow lawmakers to carry guns throughout the nation’s capital.
“I’m going to be introducing legislation this week . . . to allow congressmen to carry a side arm, should they so desire,” Rep. Mo Brooks (RAla.) told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Members of Congress are “high- profile targets, but we have absolutely no way to defend ourselves because of Washington, DC’s rather restrictive gun laws,” he said.
Brooks (right) said the legislation would allow members of Congress to be armed in places throughout Washington where average citizens typically cannot carry guns.
“I want congressmen to be treated as if they were law enforcement,” Brooks said, “given that we are highprofile targets for the bad guys, the lone wolves, the terrorists.”
Gunman James Hodgkinson was shot dead by police after firing on GOP lawmakers att an Alexandria, Va., ballfield d on Wednesday. Four people, in-including House Majority Whiphip Steve Scalise, were wounded. .
Witnesses have said the attack ttack would have been far worse if the Capitol Police officers assignedned to protect Scalise had not been there to return fire.
