Lingering illness sidelines Holliday

Matt Holliday still is dealing with issues stemming from the allergic reaction he suffered June 17 in Oakland, Calif., and missed Sunday’s game against the Rangers.

Joe Girardi said before the Yankees lost 7-6 to the Rangers on Sunday, the team is trying to determine what is wrong with Holliday, and he could go for more tests.

YANKEES NOTES

“It’s not to where it was in Oakland,” Girardi said of the severity of Holliday’s situation. “It hasn’t completely [gone] away. There’s a concern. We’ve got to figure out what’s going on here.”

The manager said he hopes the DH is back in the lineup Monday in Chicago, but until it is determined exactly what is wrong with Holliday, Girardi is unsure how long he will be out.

“That’s a concern for me, as well,” Girardi said. “He just doesn’t feel good. There’s kind of a fatigue factor in here, so we’re trying to get to the bottom of it.”

In his last 12 plate appearances, Holliday is 0-for-11 with a walk and five strikeouts.

With Holliday unavailable Sunday, Aaron Judge served as the DH.

Greg Bird and CC Sabathia both had positive results Sunday as they look to return from injuries.

Bird ran for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot in his bothersome right ankle last week and reported no problems. He has been bothered by the bone bruise that resulted from fouling a ball off his ankle near the end of spring training.

Sabathia threw a 35-pitch bullpen session and said he had no issues with the strained left hamstring that landed him on the disabled list.

Girardi said Sabathia’s next step likely will be a simulated game during the week.
