The Dewberry, Charleston, SC

- By CHRISTIAN GOLLAYAN

STANDING tall near Marion Square, home to Charleston, SC’s seasonal festivals, this former federal building has been transformed into the Dewberry, a posh boutique hotel that opened in June 2016.

The property’s namesake is John Dewberry, who saved this historic 1964 JFK-commissioned building even when everyone told him to tear it down — a rarity in preservation-obsessed Charleston. Mr. Dewberry — an Atlanta mogul who played quarterback for Georgia Tech, beat cancer and survived a plane crash — pretty much designed every element of the property himself.

WHY: Refined, elegant and timeless, this 155-room haunt was co-designed by Brooklynbased firm Workstead and takes inspiration from midcentury decor and the low country’s genteel roots. Suites and deluxe rooms are decked out with copper sconces, gilded mirrors and floor-to-ceiling windows for sweeping city views.

WORKING WELL: Excellent service. Upon arrival, guests are given maps with highlighted routes featuring the best sightseeing spots in town, most of which are within walking distance.

Not to mention, the Dewberry’s 24-hour concierge exemplifies top-notch Southern Hospitality. Looking for a shirt to wear to dinner? They’ll pick up the best button-ups in town. They’ll even replace missing iPhone chargers.

NEEDS WORK: Though the hotel’s French brassiere Henrietta’s features a dazzling art deco design and fresh seafood, it tends to get packed during brunch, and it may take a while to receive your order. But the food — especially the buckwheat crepes topped with strawberries and honey ($12) — is well worth the wait.

MUST TRY: Start your night out with a craft cocktail at the Living Room, the hotel’s “Mad Men” -inspired bar and a hot spot for the city’s belles and dandies. Drink highlights include Sergio Leone ($14), a blend of vermouth, bitters and rye, and Panic Button ($14), which features bourbon, Campari and Heering Cherry.

BOTTOM LINE: The Dewberry’s central location and luxe accommodations, makes it an ideal base to experience Charleston’s Southern charm.
