Cabrera trade value unchanged by rant

- By MIKE PUMA

MIAMI — Asdrubal Cabrera’s outburst against Mets brass last week could have eroded his standing in the clubhouse, but it might not affect his trade value.

The Mets are operating under the assumption, according to industry sources, that the veteran infielder can still bring value in return should they deal him heading into the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

An MLB talent evaluator Monday described Cabrera as “still a good player who can help some clubs.”

But whether the Mets ultimately deal Cabrera will likely depend upon the availability — or lack thereof — of other infielders on the trade market.

Last week Cabrera stated his desire to be traded, after the Mets moved him from shortstop to second base on short notice. Cabrera stated that he wanted the club to pick up his 2018 option in return for switching positions.

Since the blowup, Cabrera is 7for-14 (.500) at the plate and has looked comfortable at second base. Cabrera is among a group of veteran players including Jay Bruce, Lucas Duda, Curtis Granderson, Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins the Mets could look to deal in the coming weeks. Cabrera’s option for next season is worth $8.5 million.

David Wright is still hopeful of resuming baseball activities around July 1, but needs to receive medical clearance before that can happen.

The Mets’ captain has been on the disabled list since spring training with an impingement in his right shoulder that has kept him from throwing. Wright, who is battling spinal stenosis, missed most of last season after undergoing surgery for a herniated disk in his neck.

Dan Straily will start against the Mets on Tuesday in a rematch from a strange game that occurred on April 16 at Marlins Park. That day Straily took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but was removed at 93 pitches after walking five batters. J.T. Riddle’s walk-off homer against Addison Reed in the ninth gave the Mets a 4-2 loss.
