‘Falling’ bridge costs $2M

- Danielle Furfaro

The demolition of the Bayonne Bridge has cost the Port Authority nearly $2 million for damage to homes and vehicles, agency officials admitted Tuesday.

The project, which started four years ago, has caused debris to rain down on the Staten Island neighborhood of Port Richmond, and it’s gotten worse in the past few months as contractors started a new phase of demolition.

“There is lead paint all over. They’re supposed to have someone come and pick it up, but no one ever comes,” said Ronald Puzo, whose house is under the bridge.

Four cars on the street were badly damaged by falling debris Monday.

Officials said they have suspended concrete destruction until they figure out what happened.
