Blood test negative, Holliday still out

- By GEORGE A. KING III

CHICAGO — Matt Holliday’s blood test came back without red flags but the Yankees’ designated hitter didn’t feel well enough to play for a third straight game in a 4-3 loss to the White Sox on Tuesday night.

“He is really not much better, he says he feels bad,’’ said manager Joe Girardi, who used Tyler Austin, who went 0-for-2 with a walk, as the DH against lefty Jose Quintana. “I said, ‘What exactly does that mean? Is that like you are achy, muscles are sore?’ He said, ‘I feel like someone zapped me out of all my energy.’ The blood work has come back fine and we are still trying to figure it out what is going on.’’

Holliday missed a game on June 17 in Oakland due to an allergic reaction to some pregame food. He played in the next six games. However, he didn’t feel well enough to play Sunday against the Rangers.

“I think if it doesn’t clear up fairly soon I think you send him back to New York for further evaluation,’’ Girardi said. “I think in a day or two if he is not better you think about doing it.’’

Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury tied Pete Rose’s obscure record for reaching base the most times in a career on catcher’s interference. Ellsbury did it Tuesday for the 29th time.

After Austin played first base Monday night, Girardi started Austin Romine at first Tuesday and had Gary Sanchez behind the plate.

“If something was to happen to your catcher then you lose your DH if I did it the other way,’’ Girardi said of using Romine as the DH. “If something happened to Sanchez I stick Romine back there.’’
